Configuring Testing Devices

This topic describes how to use COS to configure COS Testing Devices.

Specifying a Proxy Host or Restricted Proxy Host

If you need to specify a proxy host or restricted proxy host for DRC INSIGHT, what you do depends on whether a COS - SD is associated with the COS ConfigurationA logical grouping of devices, usually consisting of one or more COS - SDs and Testing Devices. A COS Configuration has two primary functions: It allows you to logically group Testing Devices and COS - SDs and it allows you to easily specify the settings for all of the devices in the COS Configuration..

Go to step 4.

  1. Click on the COS ConfigurationA logical grouping of devices, usually consisting of one or more COS - SDs and Testing Devices. A COS Configuration has two primary functions: It allows you to logically group Testing Devices and COS - SDs and it allows you to easily specify the settings for all of the devices in the COS Configuration. name in the COS DashboardProvides visual status information for all COS Configurations, COS - SDs, and Testing Devices plus links that can be used to manage each COS Configuration, including COS - SDs and Testing Devices.. The Configuration Information page displays for the COS Configuration. From this page, you can specify various COS Configuration settings. Note that you can edit the COS Configuration name in the Configuration Name field.

  2. You can specify a proxy host or a restricted proxy host for DRC INSIGHT to use. This step is optional, if you do not need to perform this step (see the Important information below), skip to step 4.

Important: Many sites do not use a proxy host or a restricted proxy host. A proxy host is a device—such as a server or COS - SD. When DRC INSIGHT needs to send or receive data to/from DRC, it does so through the proxy host. A restricted proxy host is used to channel data, such as test responses, from a Testing DeviceA device used for student testing that has the DRC INSIGHT software installed on it. A device can be configured to work with one or more COS - SDs and in one or more COS Configuration. to a COS - SD over the LAN only, which prevents the Testing Devices from accessing the Internet. Sites that use restricted proxy hosts typically have special security requirements for testing. Note: To specify a restricted proxy host, a COS - SD must be associated with the COS Configuration. And, even if you have multiple COS - SDs associated with the COS Configuration, only one COS - SD can be a restricted proxy host. If you are unsure whether your site uses a proxy host or a restricted proxy host, contact your site or network administrator.

  3. Click Update Configuration to save your changes. A message displays indicating whether the COS Configuration was updated successfully.

Important: The final part of the process of configuring Testing Devices occurs when you register the Testing Device with DRC INSIGHT after DRC INSIGHT is installed on the device.

For standard testing environments, the details of registering Testing Device with DRC INSIGHT are covered in Volume III: DRC INSIGHT of the DRC INSIGHT Technology User Guide.

For restricted proxy environments, the process of registering Testing Devices with DRC INSIGHT varies depending upon the type of Internet environment the testing site is using. If your testing site is using a restricted proxy environment, see Registering Testing Devices in a Restricted Proxy Environment for more details about how to register your Testing Devices with DRC INSIGHT to test using a restricted proxy host.
